New cement to replace bone tissue developed in Nizhny Novgorod

Scientists in Nizhny Novgorod, in the mid-Volga area, are said to have developed safe cement material, capable of replacing bone tissue and enabling doctors to make a new bone during surgery, the Russian news agency TASS reported, citing Anton Novikov, a research fellow at the Nizhny Novgorod-based Volga Federal Medical Research Center.

«Our cement is not toxic and neatly repeats the natural structure of a human bone," the scientist said.

The new Russian cement to replace bone tissue has already been patented, he added. It is a synthetic material based on a special kind of polymer, which is believed to ensure improved hypoallergenic properties and the new product’s biocompatibility with the real bone.

«We had an American analog, but we couldn’t use it-it was too toxic and way too expensive. Our cement is less costly and much safer," Mr. Novikov underscored. According to him, while the American material had a price of up to $1,600 per package, the Russian one costs just about $360.

With the new safe cement to replace bone tissue now available to Center surgeons, more than 80 patients in Nizhny Novgorod have had their legs or arms repaired rather than amputated. «The patients feel well," Mr. Novikov said.
